What does “From Yesterday” Mean?
One thing you need if you are starting a blog? A name. When I began doing my research on starting my blog, I made a list of all of the things I would need, a website, an email address, a logo, etc. All of that required me to do some thinking about what I wanted to call it. It took a while before something stood out but once it hit me, “From Yesterday” was born.
One thing you will learn about me through my posts is I am a huge music buff. Music is, and has always been, an important part of my life. Everything from country, to rhythm and blues, to classic rock, alternative, and pretty much anything you put in front of me. Depending on the mood I am in or what I am doing, I can start my day on one end of the spectrum and end it on a completely different side. It is on when I am getting ready for work, anytime I am in the car, in the background at work, when I am exercising, or sometimes when I just feel like sitting down with a good album. Out of the thousands of songs you will find on my iTunes, one song stands out from the rest. From Yesterdayis the seventh track off Thirty Seconds to Mars sophomore album A Beautiful Lie. It is one song in my life that I have been able to relate to any situation or mood I am in. it is tattooed around my wrist and a constant reminder to me of how important music is to my life. It also is one of the few songs that its writer, Jared Leto has kept to himself about the meaning of the song. The intrigue surrounding it has always been something that has interested me.
Going back to 2018, I made the trip to Birmingham, Alabama to see them play on their Monolith Tour and managed to snag an upgrade to meet and greet with Jared and his brother Shannon. Part of that meet and greet involved a Q&A session, something I was really excited about. It was a hot day in July and luckily they led us to a covered tent with fans going all around. After everyone was sitting, Jared and Shannon came in and took a seat in front of all of us and just opened things up with talking to everyone. It was very laid back and casual. As I watched everyone ask their questions I thought to myself, “what is it you want to know? You have the opportunity, so what are you going to ask?”. Then it hit me and I threw it out there.
Me: “You commonly release stories and explanations to meanings behind songs you write and release. An exception to this is the song From Yesterday. Why is that?
Jared (Cracking a half smile and pausing, showing that I posed the first serious question and wasn’t asking about his favorite food or song to play on stage): That’s one I have not shared and for good reason. It is something I know personally but have chosen to keep it to myself. Which is what I want for those that listen to it. To bring out what it means to you.
After that day the song took a deeper meaning as I spent more time seeing what it meant to me. I can’t say exactly what that is but I can say it shows the power of music and the impact it can have to its listeners. So, from there I knew it was the perfect name for me to use for my blog. It personified who I am and why I am putting my thoughts and opinion to paper. So, From Yesterday is me, it is you, and it is everyone around you that has something that impacts who they were yesterday, who they are today, and who they will become tomorrow.
